The Romantic History of Ballet

The art of ballet dance is actually very old. It takes a disciplined and athletic body to perform the beautiful movements that tell us a story. Performances usually take place in a theater. Many young girls fantasize about becoming stars in the ballet world. In actuality it takes a lot of hard work and many years if they make it at all. Since so many French names are given to ballet postures, for instance the plie, most people think that the dance itself began in France. Actually ballet is known to go back as far as 15th century Italy. These movements performed during the Renaissance led to the French development of ballet as we now know it. The Queen’s Ballet Company was the very first and was located in France.

La Sylphide is credited with introducing the romantic style of ballet in the 1800s. This style used the toe dancing technique extensively and brought about many changes to ballet. However, to answer the question posed by many, the traditional tutu came from the ballet Giselle where the tutu was worn by all the ghostly spirits. All romantic ballets focused on women and this encouraged women to take on increasingly to become ballerinas. They grew up in Russia, Denmark and even the United States. While ballet prospered in other nations, it started declining in France. The decline could be because ballet was seen as being very other worldly with mythical steps. Today many more modern ballets are being performed, while at the same time audiences still love the classical and romantic forms. All of these styles are still taught and performed as ballet is immensely popular. People are constantly impressed at the variety and complexity of movements that humans are capable of. Even though most of us will never be able to perform these moves, we can marvel and dream when we see ballet on stage.

Getting the Right Ballet Shoes

Ballet shoes are said to be the ballet dancer’s best friend. If a ballet dancer has the wrong ballet shoes, catastrophe can occur. Ill fitting ballet shoes can cause a new dancer to never learn the proper techniques. Improper balance and injury can also occur with ballet shoes that are not properly fitted. Any ballet dancer knows that properly fitted ballet shoes are of the up most importance. Ballet shoes have 5 parts. These are: The quarters, drawstrings, side seams, pleats, and binding. For properly fitted ballet shoes each of these parts should be adjusted to fit the dancer’s foot to perfection. Ballet shoes should be fitted so that the dancer can feel the floor beneath them. In essence, ballet shoes should feel like a second skin.

The first thing you must realize is that your feet can both be different sizes. Try on various ballet shoes to see what fits best. The next step to properly fitting your ballet shoes is to be sure you are wearing tights as you would be when you are wearing your ballet shoes to dance. This will help to ensure a better fit. Never try on ballet shoes without wearing tights. Next, when you first put on your ballet shoes, pay attention to your toes. You may also injure yourself if you cannot perform the proper dance techniques as a result of your toes curling. One more thing you should also pay attention to is if your ballet shoes are too big, you will curl your toes in effort to keep the ballet shoes on. This will also result in a poor performance, bad technique, and possible injury. The next step is to criss cross your drawstrings. Then “pointe” your foot. There should be no gaping in the width of your ballet shoes. This also means there should be no extra space at any part of your ballet shoes. Also, there should be absolutely no toe room. If there is toe room you will not be able to properly “pointe” your foot. You also will not be able to feel the floor beneath you. Hence you cannot perform any dance techniques properly. Properly fitted ballet shoes are the most important thing for a ballet dancer. With all of these things in mind, you should be able to properly fit your ballet shoes. This way you are sure to be on your way to a beautiful dance performance.

They are often working into areas best left to heal, and not addressing the real causes of their aches and pains.

No matter how remote the dancers location, and what standard of teaching he/she is able to get, as long as they have access to an internet connection, there is the possibility to learn so much about their own body, as well as techniques to advance their dancing. From beginner ballet, to learning pointe work, and moving on into a professional dance career, there is access to advice and information as well as courses and products to help them gain the edge needed to excel in this demanding world.
